The 2019 Toyota Camry is a compelling entry in the family-sedan class, one that can compete on more than its reputation for flawless reliability and great resale value. With an extremely fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine and an available hybrid version, it appeals to the eco-friendly crowd. Although its performance pales in comparison with sportier rivals such as the Honda Accord and the Mazda 6, the Toyota Camry has a comfortable ride and competent handling. And there's more: Toyota's commitment to providing heaps of standard driver-assistance technology holds firm. While there are several minor shortcomings, there's no mistaking that the 2019 Camry has been reborn.
Technology
The Camry's standard infotainment touchscreen measures 7.0 inches, but an 8.0-inch touchscreen is included on higher trims. Both include Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi hotspot compatibility; built-in navigation is optional or included depending on trim. A 4.2-inch gauge cluster information display is standard, and a 7.0-inch unit is included on higher trims. There's one USB port in models with the smaller infotainment screen, or three ports in those with the larger screen; a wireless device charger is optional. A head-up display and 360-degree view parking camera system are available. A six-speaker audio system is standard, and a nine-speaker JBL premium setup is available.
Utility (Cargo Space and Interior Room)
In the Camry L, trunk cargo capacity is 14.1 cubic feet. On all other trims, it's 15.1 cubic feet. Those trims also include a 60/40 split-folding second-row seat to further increase cargo capacity.
Front-row headroom measures 38.3 inches as standard or 37.5 inches in models with a moonroof. That compares to 39.5 inches in standard Honda Accord models or 37.5 inches in models with a moonroof. Second-row headroom is 38.0 inches in the Camry, a bit more than 37.3 inches (37.2 inches with a moonroof) in the Accord. Front-row legroom is 42.1 inches in the Toyota, just less than 42.3 inches in the Honda. Second-row legroom is also less in the Camry at 38.0 inches to the Accord's 40.4 inches.
Safety
When equipped with the available adaptive LED projector headlights, the Camry earns IIHS 2019 Top Safety Pick + designation. Those units earn a Good score, the highest, while the standard non-adaptive LED headlights get an Acceptable score, the second-highest. Regardless, the Camry gets a Good score in all crashworthiness tests. Its standard front-crash prevention system receives the highest score of Superior, as it avoided collisions in both 12-mph and 25-mph tests. From the NHTSA, the Camry earns a five-star (out of five) overall safety rating, which factors five-star frontal crash, side crash, and rollover protection scores.
All Camry models are equipped with 10 airbags. Standard driver-assist and active safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional or included depending on trim.
